Carbon Steel Plate vs Sheet
Plates and sheets are two common metal grades that can be distinguished based on their thickness.
- Carbon steel plate is designed in thickness above 6mm, extending up to 150mm or more. The plates in this grade are employed in applications where the requirement of strength and durability are of the highest degree.
- Carbon steel sheets are designed with thicknesses of less than 6mm. The versatile sheets are used to add an aesthetical appeal to the component. The modules focus more on weight-saving rather than providing durability.

Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate vs Cold Rolled Carbon Steel Plate
Carbon steel plates can be produced in a hot or cold rolling process. Both these processes can be distinguished based on certain aspects.
- Hot rolled carbon plates are processed at high temperatures above 1700 degrees F in mills. This is near their recrystallization value, allowing them to be precisely shaped.
- Cold rolled carbon plates are processed at room temperature immediately after the hot rolling process.
- Carbon cold rolled plates possess a superior surface finish coupled with enhanced strength when compared to hot rolled carbon grade plates.
- Hot rolled carbon steel plates possess a rounded edge; however, cold rolled carbon steel plates have a distinct surface finish.
- Hot rolled plates are cheaper than standard cold rolled carbon plates.

What is Carbon Steel Strip and Coil?
Strips and coils are two important metal components. A carbon steel coil is a module that is coiled after the rolling phase and can be transported for better handling and efficiency. These coils have a width of less than 500mm. Strips of carbon steel are sheared from coils and can be used to weld different items in place.
Is Mild Carbon Steel Plate magnetic?
A mild carbon grade contains high content of iron giving it good magnetic properties and making it ferromagnetic in nature.
